Exclusive Hellboy VFX Breakdown Reel from RISE FX

hellboy

August 20th, 2019

RISE FX, the award-winning German visual effects studio, has released a VFX breakdown reel highlighting their recent creature work on Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot. The film, based on Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy” graphic novels and two previous Hellboy films starring Ron Perlman and written / directed by Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro, features David Harbour of Stranger Things fame in the title role as a beleaguered and emotionally torn superhero caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, who battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.

Harbour’s blunt-horned Hellboy, wielding both flaming sword and Milla Jovovich’s severed head, is quite the spectacle! I’m convinced that somewhere, there must exist volumes of storyboards, or some crazy previs, focused solely on interesting and narratively satisfying ways Hellboy can be subjected to physical punishment – watching him absorb an unbelievably relentless pounding is one of the film’s greatest achievements.

In describing their work, RISE shares, “Straight from hell and RISE comes Hellboy, a new approach to the epic adventures of Red. For this journey, the team around VFX supervisor and creative director Markus Degen added St. Pauls Cathedral to partial set builds, designed daemons and alternate realities, lit King Arthur's crypt on fire, gave Hellboy his fire crown and sword, opened the gates of hell and helped set an end to the reign of the Blood Queen.”
